Description
Bad Rock Canyon, between Plains and Thompson Falls,Montana, was cut by the Glacial Lake Missoula floods toward the end of the last ice age. The canyon, cut between the Cabinet Mountains on the north and the Coeur d’Alene range of the Bitterroot Mountains on the south, is so narrow that there is barely room for the Clark Fork River, Montana Highway 200, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks which follow the cut. There is little to no room to widen the narrow highway to help it carry modern loads.
Driving through the canyon, I am always captivated by the majestic rocks rising above me, and the way the rocks seem to catch the clouds as seen here.
