Description
Häme Castle most likely dates from the 1300s when it served as a military fortress on the border of the Kingdom of Sweden and the Russian Novgorod. Built on an island, today it faces the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. Over the centuries, it has served as a military fortress, a home for Swedish nobility, a prison, and now as part of the National Museum of Finland. Located roughly one hour north of Helsinki by train, the community surrounding the castle is Hämeenlinna, which can be translated as Häme Castle. Hämeenlinna is the birthplace of composer Jean Sibelius and home of the Wetterhoff, a world-reknowned school of arts and crafts which I visited in 1985 while on a business trip to Finland. The image has been scanned from a 35mm slide.
